Mackinac(spelled MAK-in-aw) is one of the gorgeous islands with beautiful beaches in the United States of America. Situated in Lake Huron, one of the Great Lakes of America, it has a vast history associated with it. This Land of great battles has still a lot of European cultures left within it and thus the uniqueness in culture and architecture. Originally, Michilimackinac which means “Big Turtle” in the Native American language named so after the shape of this island.
Let’s go there –
How to reach?
This island is a favorite one-day destination for all the travelers who ride along the Great Lakes of America. 400 miles from Chicago, it is about a 6-hour beautiful ride along Great Michigan and is about a 4-hour ride from Green Bay, Wisconsin to Mackinac City. And there are a lot of ferry options to complete the journey to the Island from the city.
To make the most of it, take a ferry from Green Bay to the other end of Michigan along with your car and complete the rest of the journey by land. Breathtaking views of Lake Michigan won’t disappoint even for a bit.
Don’t miss Sleeping Bear Dunes on the way to Island, one of the most beautiful place in America.
Also, there is a not-so-fun part to reach- the Island’s chartered airport.
Where to stay?
There are several hotels all along the coast of the island with amazing views. But the visitor’s all-time favorite is Grand Hotel for its huge palace-like structure and its BIG breakfast buffet.
Grand Hotel will be open only in Summer. Watch out for crazy deals in April, its opening month to stay at this beautiful palace and experience the island in style.
What to do?
Skip the famous carriage ride and rent a bike to explore the island at one’s ease. There are trail signs posted all along the island from the Ferry Terminal and back. Grab a map and complete the self-guided trip in about 5 hours.
